The ‘Little Rabbit’ childrens books are fun! Illustrated by Heidi D’hamers, written & sketched by Heidi & Gunter, which means: all the sweat and hard magnificent illustration work was done by Heidi, while I was happily tip-toeing through the tulips. Now already being published in Belgium & The Netherlands, France, Austria & Germany, Servia, China & Taiwan, South-Korea, Japan… and even available in a bookstore close to you!

Max de muis!

July 11, 2007 by gusblog

100_2161mini12.jpg
Here it is: “Max de muis ontdekt de Stad” (”Max the mouse discovers the City”). A children’s book made for Technopolis (www.technopolis.be) in cooperation with ‘uitgeverij De Standaard’. Text written by Annemie Bosmans, illustrations and graphic design by Gunter & Heidi. A really beautifully printed book, with fold-out pages, additional cards and a ‘look-for-the-thief’ game. You can just have fun reading the book; but you can also visit, play & experiment in the accompanying expo at technopolis (www.technopolis.be/kinderdoecentrum).

Boterhammen!

July 11, 2007 by gusblog

ab-2007.jpgSneak preview of the poster for the upcoming annual free ‘Boterhammen in het Park’-music festival by the Ancienne Belgique (’www.abconcerts.be’). Since the start of the festival Eek the squirrel has been the eye-catcher of all the ‘Boterham’-posters and publications. The 2007 poster and illustrations where the result of a gloomy sunday afternoon brainstorm with AB’s MarcDC and is kind of an hommage to the eighties ‘Frank Margerin’ comics. Visit the free Boterhammen-festival in Brussels Warandepark 27 till 31 of august, 2007. more info on ‘www.boterhammenindestad.be’.

Fun with the Residents

July 11, 2007 by gusblog

In 2004 I was able to contribute to the ‘Residents Commercial DVD’-project. An update of their legendary cult album ‘the commercial album’, which included 40 one-minute songs. The album was kind of a reaction against the stupidity of pop-music (the repetition of ‘verse-chorus-verse’ being reducted to a one-minute piece that could be multiplied by the listener in order to achieve the standard 3 minute song) and the way music was being sold as a ‘product’: ‘the residents’ bought 1 minute publicity slots on the radio and so ’sold’ their ‘product’ to the public. Fun! While making the animation video for the song I was handed (”My work is so behind”) I imagined reacting in it the same way. I decided to make something completely unexpected for the Residents (who have kind of spooky visuals) and so came up with this ‘childish’ looking animation, including chickens, pinguins and so on. Very un-Residents…, I even expected them to drop the video from the DVD, but they didn’t… The best reaction from a customer being “This video is a joke, isn’t it? I hated it in first, but now.. ven like it!”.

The Eek-files…

July 11, 2007 by gusblog

Web movies created for the Ancienne Belgique (website and local television). A little movies intended to attract the attention to the artists playing the day the movie was showed. The first movie shows ‘Eek’ the squirrel as a sandwich-man showing up in differnet parts of Brussels, the second movie shows ‘Eek’ running from his home in the city park (where the festival used to be held) to the ‘Place d’Espagne’ in the heart of Brussels (where the festival was held that year).

“We only want peace, peace! A little piece of Poland, a little piece of France…” and here we have a little piece of Belgium.
Altough the former quote was not really politically correct (*), this illustration certainly is. Used in the 2006 ‘Sp.a’ - election campaign.

X-dog

July 11, 2007 by gusblog

xdogmini.jpg
Not something I found underneath an old closet, but an entry for an exhibition that never took place. Participants had to ‘make something’ based on an alphabet-letter. I was given the exciting X, and came up with the adventures of “X-dog”, a superhero dog who thinks he has got super-powers, but unfortunately hasn’t… Presented as something that had been made a century ago.
